Where Did All the Patients Go?

In the last 2 years since learning the word “COVID” have you canceled your primary care (general doctor) appointment? Or maybe your doctor’s office even called you to cancel!

You are not alone.

According to a recent study published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine by Ahmed Ahmed MPP MSc, 1 in 5 adults continue to delay their medical care since March 2020.

Other survey results from the National Poll on Health Aging show that 1 in 3 adults over the age of 50 had delays in care due to COVID and many of those questioned have still not received care.

I get it. We’ve been dealing with a lot of uncertainties. Perhaps you were feeling fine and didn’t see the need. Or maybe you wanted to stay in the comfort of your covid-free home. Some of us may have been counting how many rolls of toilet paper we had remaining (no judgement here!).

But that missed visit (or two, or three..) will add up when we are talking about your health. Especially for those with chronic conditions which include hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol.  Such conditions can lead to complications without regular monitoring.  

Not having regular screenings means you could miss a condition in its earliest presentation when it is best to treat it.

Now that we have more information about the COVID-19 virus and some powerful tools to help keep us healthy (thank you vaccines and masks!) it’s safer to return to your primary care doctor’s office.

When you reach out to your primary care doctor they can lead you through these tricky health times and possibly prevent an ER visit or hospitalization.

You don’t have to wait until you feel ill! Although you should definitely reach out during those times.
